Why Weight Loss Gets Harder After 35 (and What We Look at First)
If you're eating well, moving your body and still watching the scale stall, you're not imagining it, and it's not a willpower problem. I hear this almost every week from women in Denver and Ken Caryl: "I'm doing everything I used to do, and my body stopped responding."
What changes after 35
Several things shift at once. Muscle mass naturally starts to decline, which lowers how much energy your body uses at rest. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone begin to fluctuate, which can affect sleep, cravings and where your body stores fat. Stress adds up too: busy seasons of work, kids and caregiving keep stress hormones elevated, and that can make fat loss feel stuck.
None of this means something is wrong with you. It means the old playbook of eating less and working out more often isn't enough on its own anymore.
What we look at first
At Tulip Aesthetic Medicine, weight loss starts with understanding, not a meal plan off the shelf. In a consultation we look at:
Your labs: thyroid, blood sugar markers, hormones and other key panels, so we're working from data instead of guessing.
Protein and muscle: most women I meet eat far less protein than their body needs to protect muscle.
Blood sugar swings: the 3 p.m. crash and evening cravings usually follow a pattern.
Sleep and stress: two of the most overlooked drivers of stubborn weight.
The three ingredients I cut first: seed oils, processed sugar and white flour. Not forever and not perfectly, just enough to see how your body responds.
Where medical support fits
For some women, lifestyle changes are enough. For others, a medically supervised program can help, which may include prescription options, peptide therapy or hormone support when appropriate. Every plan is individualized and overseen by our medical team, and whether a treatment is right for you depends on your health history and labs.
A simple place to start this week
Pick one thing: add protein to breakfast (I aim for 25 to 30 grams), take a 10-minute walk after dinner, or swap one processed snack for a whole-food one. Small, consistent shifts tell you more about your body than any crash diet.
There is no quick fix, there is only the science, and a plan built around your body.
